MEET THE AUTHOR
FEATURED AUTHOR: JONAH GIBSON
Hi Jacks here! Today SBC welcomes the deeply gifted author JONAH GIBSON!
Hi Jonah, let’s start out by GETTING TO KNOW YOU.
What GENRE DO YOU WRITE? WHY?
I don't think of myself as a genre author. I just write stories that interest me. I start with characters and throw them into a situation—often one loosely based on something that actually happened to me or someone I know—and see what happens. I end up with stories that cross genres. There are elements of mystery, suspense, noir, social satire, and even romance. Just like real life … if real life were distilled down to the interesting bits. If there is an overarching thread in my work, it is humor. Why? It's not just a coping mechanism. It's my superpower.
Can you please share the TITLES OF YOUR BOOKS?
A CUP OF PENDING is my most recent novel release.
SPEEDSTER was my first novel.
BUSES & BEARS, BULLETS & STONES is a collection of quirky short stories.
What is ONE THING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU JONAH?
I spent most of my adult life as a CPA and financial executive. I've spent all of my waking hours since 2008 trying to escape the left-brain confines of those particular disciplines. I think I've succeeded, but you never really know for sure, do you?
Agreed! (Jacks)

Where did you draw YOUR INSPIRATION from for your current work?
A CUP OF PENDING and SPEEDSTER both got their start in real events. I lost my job in 2008, the day Lehman Brothers collapsed. I was a middle-aged man with health issues and rarified work experience. I knew I wasn't going to get another job easily or soon. Then I got cancer. Except for the charity of friends and family, I faced the very real prospect of becoming homeless. I got to wondering how a person with my particular skills and proclivities would fare under such circumstances. Thus Clifford Trask was born and his story launched with a cup of pending coffee. I'm all better now … and so is Cliff.
In 2002 I bought a used import car to drive to and from work. Appeasing a wild hair, I put trick wheels and a fat exhaust pipe on it and had it painted metallic plum. Then I joined a tuner punk car club, which turned out to be full of twenty-something fools who didn't know very much about cars. They called me 'Uncle Speed' because I was older than their dads and because my car ran most of the time. The situation got progressively more ridiculous, and I had to quit the club for the sake of my sanity and dignity. Fortunately, I stayed long enough to roll up a pretty good idea for a story. It took eleven years of sporadic gestation, but eventually became SPEEDSTER.
Who is ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?
Mark Twain made me want to write.
Elmore Leonard showed me how to tell a modern story.
Annie Proulx showed me how to mine personal tragedy for wisdom, grace, and humor.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
What should people EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?
I've got quite a few things percolating:
UNFINISHED BUSINESS is a romantic mystery/thriller about a college professor who helps a former student look for her long-lost mother and ends up finding the love of his life.
OFF OFF BROADWAY is a science fiction space opera about a clinically depressed detective with a digital therapist living inside his head who has romantic feelings for him due to a programming glitch. I'm looking at this one as the first in a series. I think it's got a lot of potential. I also think it will be a lot of fun to write.
ALL THAT GLITTERS is the tale of an exotic dancer and a disaffected priest who set out to get some justice in a jaded world. My favorite themes are all at play here: the arrogance of wealth and privilege, a rush to judgment by the self-righteous, and that, like it or not, we're all in this together. All these lessons will be served up with a healthy dose of snark because that's who I am.
Any UPCOMING EVENTS?
Nothing booked at the moment. Hoping this changes when I get some traction with a few more titles.
What are you MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
Getting the aforementioned traction. I can feel it beginning to happen. What I've done so far has been well received, and I'm learning by dribs and drabs how to get more visibility.

Today we have a treat for all of you, here is a look into A CUP OF PENDING:

A CUP OF PENDING
A delicious tale of vengeance gone so wrong it just feels right!
Down on his luck and homeless, Cliff Trask tries to score a cup of pending coffee in an upscale Miami coffee shop. He and a friend are assaulted by a self-entitled hedge-fund manager. They decide to exact an elaborate bit of revenge, and end up with a pile of money and a lot more trouble than they ever imagined possible. The scheme goes off the rails in weird and wondrous ways. Cliff is soon embroiled with crooked cops, drug cartel assassins, and a gaggle of ex-trophy-wives, all working their own agendas. As if that weren't enough, the whole thing plays out on a Miami based reality TV show where Cliff manages to become the star of this unfolding disaster.
Will Cliff wind up dead at the hands of the determined forces arrayed against him, or will he and his friends marshal their collective street savvy to escape an awful fate at the last possible instant?
Book Notes: A CUP OF PENDING is a laugh-stoked romp through the Tropics, from South Beach to the boondocks of Tobago and back, with characters and events that would be unlikely in any other locale, but seem perfectly at home in the sun-drenched, sex-obsessed confines of Florida's Gold Coast.
